The European Commission has approved EUR 353 million in State aid from Germany to Element 3-5 GmbH for a plant in Baesweiler, North Rhine-Westphalia, for the production of silicon carbide ("SiC") epiwafers

The European Commission's announcement of approval sends a strong signal for Europe as a semiconductor location, and especially for North Rhine-Westphalia. We expressly welcome the Announcement and see it as an important foundation for expanding technological sovereignty in the field of power semiconductors and SiC epitaxy based on ELEMENT3-5 Next Level Epitaxy technology.

At the same time, it is clear that the funding commitment is just the beginning. The successful implementation of the projects, the establishment of resilient supply chains, and the scaling of industrial processes will be crucial for achieving the ambitious goals of the EU Chips Act in a sustainable way.
